Grade 1 Spatial Sense: How Long? How Big?

Your students will spend five engaging days exploring what it means to measure the world around them. Through hands-on stations and puppet-guided lessons with Roo the Ruler Rabbit and Cal the Calendar Cat, your Grade 1 class will name measurable attributes (length, area, mass, capacity), compare and order everyday classroom objects using concrete strategies, and learn to navigate and read a calendar.

This full unit moves your students from naming attributes on Day 1, to comparing objects by length and area on Day 2, to weighing and filling containers on Day 3, to reading dates and seasons on Day 4, and finally to a capstone day that pulls it all together. The lessons use station rotations, partner work, and purposeful dialogue to build measurement thinking. Your students will understand not just *how* to measure, but *why* different attributes matter in different situations.
