Your students will become money detectives in this engaging 7-day unit on financial literacy! Over the course of a week, they'll explore how different combinations of coins and bills represent the same amount of money, moving confidently from understanding the toonie (200¢) all the way up to working with $100 bills and amounts up to $200.
Each lesson builds on the last. Students start by discovering the $100 bill and relating it to coins they already know. They then move through hands-on activities like the Coin Puzzle Station, where they find multiple ways to make 100¢ and 200¢; the ATM Machine, where they practice breaking down $100 into various bill combinations; and the Fair Trade game, where they compare two different sets of money to see if they're equal in value. By mid-week, students tackle real-world math: adding up the cost of multiple items and choosing the most efficient bills to pay.
The unit culminates in a playful market simulation where your students run their own store, handle transactions as managers, and go shopping as customers. You'll conduct brief one-on-one interviews to assess their ability to represent and compare high-value amounts. Throughout, the language is warm and playful—detectives, puzzles, quests—keeping Grade 2 minds engaged while building genuine number sense and money fluency.
