Teaching Number Sense in Early Math
Ask a Grade 2 class to solve 8 + 5 and you'll see two very different strategies: some students count up one-by-one from 8, and others instantly regroup to 10 + 3. The difference isn't natural talent — it's number sense, and it's teachable. Here's how to build it deliberately in K–3 math instead of racing straight to memorized facts.
Counting is not number sense
Being able to recite "1, 2, 3..." doesn't mean a student understands that 5 represents a quantity that's one more than 4 and one less than 6. Before any addition worksheet, spend real time on subitizing — recognizing small quantities (dot patterns, dice faces, ten-frames) without counting one-by-one — and on the number line as a mental model, not just a strip on the wall.
Anchor everything to 5 and 10
Ontario's early math curriculum leans hard on the ten-frame for a reason: once a student can instantly see 7 as "5 and 2 more", addition facts like 7 + 4 stop being memorization and become reasoning ("5 and 2, plus 4 more, is 5 and 6, which is 11"). Ten-frames and part-part-whole diagrams should show up daily, well before students are drilled on standard addition worksheets.
- Kindergarten: subitizing dot patterns 1–5, one-to-one correspondence while counting
- Grade 1: ten-frames to 10, making 10 (7+3, 6+4, 5+5), simple part-part-whole
- Grade 2: place value to 100, regrouping through 10, doubles and near-doubles
- Grade 3: place value to 1000, flexible mental strategies for 2-digit addition and subtraction
The payoff shows up later: a student with strong number sense can estimate whether an answer is reasonable, catch their own errors, and extend a strategy to a problem they've never seen — exactly what report-card expectations and later grades demand. Worksheets still matter here, but only once they reinforce a strategy the student can explain, not just an algorithm they've memorized.
One honest note about what we sell, so you don't go looking for something that isn't here: we don't have a deep bank of number-sense worksheets. What we do have is a Grade 1 number-sense lesson, a Kindergarten measurement unit and a first-money unit, and a lot of Algebra-strand coding work — which builds the ordering and prediction thinking that patterning and number sense both sit on.
